HISTORY
After the Guild joined hands, so to speak, with FLAME, (Framingham Lomonosov Association for Mutual Exchange) Framingham's sister city organization, in 1994, the Guild became international friends with the artists of Lomonosov, Russia, Framingham's sister city. This friendship began with an exchange of mail and e-mail between the two art organizations. The Russian group, Kolorit, among other things, proposed an art cultural exchange.
The Guild rose
to the challenge of making this exchange work. Since the economic status of the
Russians was very poor, the burden of costs fell to the Guild. With a grant from
the Framingham Cultural Council and a great deal of fund-raising, three Russian
artists, Victor Petrov-Grinev, President, Vladimir Slepukhin and Anatoli Petrov,
along with thirty of their paintings, were brought to Framingham for two weeks
in the summer of 1995. They stayed with host families here and were treated to
tours of places of cultural and artistic interest. Their paintings, along with
thirty paintings from individual artists of the Guild, were shown for months in
many local sites including
Boston City Hall.
In the summer
of 1996, twelve Guild artists and friends, along with their paintings, went to
Lomonosov for two weeks during the time of the 'White Nights'. As did the
Russians when in the United States, the Americans in Lomonosov lived in the
homes of host families where they were received and treated as the most loved of
relatives.
Along with Russian artists' artworks, the Guild members' paintings were
exhibited in the Japanese Pavilion of Prince Menchikov's palace in
Lomonosov. A grand reception was held on the premises and the Guild members were
highly honored. The members' remaining time was spent visiting the historic and
cultural areas of Lomonosov, St. Petersburg, the Hermitage and Peter the Great's
palace.
It was an extraordinary visit for both art groups.
